secret santa
So my company's Secret Santa drawing has finally gotten me off my art-avoiding ass and moving doing some things.
I found this great paper down in the International District the other day. It's those huge pieces of japanese bookbinder's paper that are -so- amazing to look at and great to use (since they're pretty much foolproof, and crease like a dream), and it gave me Inspiration for my Secret Santa dealie.
I'm making a japanese stab-bound journal for her, and bought a vanilla candle that I wrapped in a strip of the same paper. I'm planning on finding some kind of matching gold-colored pen, and give it all to her as a sort of Journal Kit. So far, I'm thinking she'll like it, but then again, some people just aren't journallers. I guess if I get one of those artificially wide-eyed "thank yooooou"s, I'll just ask her straight out if she hates it and give her ten bucks instead and find a better home for the kit. :)
I got the most fabulous thing in the mail today from di the wondergirl. A book of Pablo Neruda's poetry called "Full Woman, Fleshly Apple, Hot Moon" that I'm drooling over. I'd love to illustrate this stuff and make some artist's books out of it. (Ben works for a company that has one of those Holy Grail type photocopiers that are too big to appropriate, but wonderful to use, and I'm absolutely -dreaming- about limited edition artist's books at this point. I'm so easily impressed.)
She also sent along a copy of AEZ, the artserratica zine that comes with a companion CD. I haven't looked at the CD yet, but if the print section is any indication of what I'm in for, I -so- can't wait to play. I love it so far....it's more like an artsy little literary magazine, and I'm -enthralled-. I hope this issue of IQ will be -half- this good -- I'm doing it all by hand and am therefore more worried that everyone will hate it. We'll see.
Job's going well, life's going well, and my world is pretty rosy altogether. Seattle's been good for me.

moving blood
What makes your blood move?
I don't mean that in any kind of literal sense, of course. I mean: what, when you even -think- about it, makes your heart skip a beat and a fire light under your butt and gives you the itches?
I've got a huge list. Morocco. Handmade books. Great japanese paper. Subterranean cave hiking. Writing. Zines of all kinds, mine and everyone else's. Really great mexican food. Sex in weird places. Any kind of middle-eastern music and bellydancing. Houseboats. Lots of mail and a full mailbox. The politics game. Intensely visual poetry. Pushing the boundaries of any established convention, even if that convention is only in my head. Las Vegas at two a.m.. A solo trip on Route 66. Books, ALL books, some more than others.
Get me started and I'm liable to start salivating on demand.
You can tell a lot about a person by what his passions are. What he buys, what he thinks, what he feels in the middle of the night when everything else is quiet.
What do you love? Who are you? What do you want?
Tell me. I want to know.
