a short biography of a life in crime

Hi.

You've reached the website of Eliza Metz. Eliza's not in to take your call right now, but if you leave a message at the tone, she'll get back to you as soon as she can......*beeeep*

Err....wait. That's not it at all. Let's try this again, shall we?

Hi!

I'm Eliza Metz, and I suck so bad at writing biographical information that my friends should probably tackle me and drag me away from the computer when I'm compelled to do so. For my own good.

That said, you've probably clicked here because you want to know more about the person behind the website, right? So I should probably oblige. I thought about doing a "story so far" kind of post here, but honestly, it'd take up so much space that nobody'd ever get to the bottom. And there's good stuff at the bottom. Wouldn't want you to miss it.

So, in a nutshell, here's who I am:

I am an artist.
That's probably a duh moment, since you're here and you've poked around a bit. But primarily, that's what I am. An artist and some other stuff. No matter what else changes -- and trust me, 'round these parts, things change pretty often -- that's the one thing that's been a constant for quite a few years. I've done stuff for me, I've done stuff for pay, and I've done stuff just because the mood strikes. I'm a little bit eclectic in my choice of expression, but it's all Art to me.

I am a wife.
I just happened to marry a sideshow freak. Oh, but seriously. Sword-swallowing, fire-breathing, hand-in-an-animal-trap, semi-certifiable freak. Most of my friends said that this didn't surprise them in the least, and my mother, bless her heart, said that she thought I'd finally found someone who could keep up with me. You go, Mom.

I am a writer.
I used to do a lot more writing online. Now it's mostly blogs and more blogs and even more blogs. And a whole lot of books and other publications when I have time. I still love writing.

I am a knitter and spinner.
And if you could see the state of my yarn stash right now, you'd totally know that to be true. I make a whole lot of socks, because they're fun, and lately, I've been on a sweater kick. And stuffed toys. Because I might be relatively old-ish, but I'm really twelve inside, where it counts. I have a thing for fiber, and I'm proud that my addiction only takes up time and space in my house, rather than my sanity. Though that last part has the jury still out for debate sometimes.

I am a podcaster.
Don't know what that is? Think you need an iPod to listen? You don't. And that said, I'm one of the co-hosts for Lime & Violet, a weekly podcast about creative life and creative knitting, in that order. It's not for kids. We've been known to let an F-bomb slip by. Thought I'd mention that.

I am a Muse.
No, seriously. When people ask me what I want to do when I grow up....despite the fact that I'm 35 at the time of this writing....I tell them I'm going to be a Muse. My one, great passion in this life is helping other people Get Creative. There's something creative in everyone, and sometimes, all it needs is a little encouragement to break forth. Screw the naysayers, people! MAKE STUFF.

I am a Seattlite.
Doesn't matter where I was born or where I grew up. (Hint: Not Seattle.) Doesn't matter a bit where I am now. (Hint: DEFINITELY not Seattle. Probably the Anti-Seattle, actually.) It's home. Lived there once, will live there again before this summer. (summer '07, in case I let this get as out of date as the last one.) Rain flows in my veins and Rainier owns my soul. It's that simple.

I am a Dog Person.
And if you don't believe me, you can ask one of the three dogs that currently share our home. Just don't tell them that they share the home -- they think they own it. Cash (lab), Shenzi (lab mix), and Shunka (????) are as close to babies as I'm going to get for myself, I think.

That's about it.
There's a lot more, actually. But in a nutshell, that pretty much explains it all.
